MX Tabs Closes

Tablature is great for learning to play songs without having to learn
sheet music. With pressure from the MPA and sheet music organisations
Mxtabs, one of the greatest tab resources was forced to close despite
over $3000 per month in sales of licensed sheet music via their links.

Ugh. This is so freaking stupid. I can see why the RIAA is going after people for sharing songs. I mean, artists put a ton of blood, sweat and tears into songs. If they’re signed and don’t make the money back through sales, the label drops them. If they’re indipendant, they just don’t recoop the money they spent to produce the album (usually in the $10k ballpark for your average indipendant album).

However.. I don’t see a reason to not let people share how they play a song. It isn’t sharing the song… you can’t hear it… you can’t download the song… heck, maybe you can’t even play it. It’s just how another person plays a song.

If anything this would lead to more sales for the artist and record label. Heck, it leads to more sales for tablature books.

The music industry isn’t about the music any more. It’s about money.

  1. i agree with everything you said.i used mxtabs since i started playing bass 3 years ago and is the only reason why i didnt give up on music not knowing how to read music it helped alot to have a site like that up.

  2. i cound’t agree with you more my guitar class teacher told the entire cleass about mx tabs it was the only place that i could trust to have correct tabs.

  3. seriously, I had no idea…i always went there then one day i try…i figure it’s my stupid comp actin up again then I find this article….darn …mxtabs let me play songs I liked by other artists…i dont see how its bad because its not like we’re gonna learn the songs and make a cd of all teh sogns so we wont have to but them…if anything I’d buy a Cd or sumthing to play along with…it made me feel closer to teh artist…..sux major asssssssssssssssssssss…..ughhh…..oh well…i guess i’ll just have to go somewhere else…..

  6. -_-; Too f**king true. I have nothing but anger for the MPA right now. I mean, MX even closed OUT OF A SIGN OF GOOD WILL not too long ago…those money-grubbing bastards sure have their heads up their arses. Xp

    Same as dan stated above, I started using it when I first picked up bass. And half the artists I looked up don’t have sheet music available for purchase…hell, half of them actually RECOMMENDED you go look for the fan-made tabs on the net. WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE IDIOTS THINKING!?

  8. man this one really kills me. mxtabs was the greatest online free tabs site. all shutting this site down does is HURT the music community. now less kids (like myself) can easily find and learn from these tabs. this is BULLSHIT!!

  14. I couldn’t agree more with the beginning article, this is total bullshit, mx tabs had an extensive collection of tabs, it was because of mx tabs that i learned to play guitar, bass, and drums, and it was the only site that i know of that had free drum tabs,

  17. This is an as-shole against another bigger ass-hole issue, plain and simple!

    First off I don’t know what is so wrong with tabs, there’s no difference between writing out the tab than writing out the lycrics to a song. Please don’t tell me it’s illegal to write out the lyrics to a song. If I want to reprint lyrics to a song and post them on my website and give credit to who wrote the song there is nothing wrong with this. Journalists do it all the time, when they quote another persons work. What about all the DVDs and books out there that show you how to play another artist’s song? They have DVDs that show you how to play SRV, Eric Clapton, Metallica, Nirvana the list goes on and on and on and on. What’s the difference? Or what about your local guitar teacher showing you how to play these songs? Is he breaking some kind of royalty infraction?

    I use to go to MXTABS.net all the time for drum and guitar tab loved their website it was the only website I would go and use, I was always posting in their forums and helping others out with question. One day I decided to plug my website which happened to sell instructional items and they banned me, this is what I get for being a loyal fan and contributer? Man talk about being fired up!!!! Knowing they get a lot of foot traffic I decided to calm down and ask them how much adevertising would be for a banner, and these money grabbing assholes tell me depending on how many impressions and hits I want that it’s going to be around $2000/month, what a joke! I can get that with a color ad in a magazine!

    IMO they are the money grubbing as-s holes and they deserve everything they got, as the saying goes “What goes around comes around”.

    Damn Bastards I’m glad they went down and as far as the MPA

  22. I cant belive such a valuble site such as Mxtabs was shut down by some greedy corporate big-wig. It was the only place where you could get decent drum tabs, and the guitar and bass tab database was vast. What happened to musicians sharing knowledge and ideas with one another? Mxtabs wasnt just a tab site, it had extremly helpful forums that gave exellent advice to other musicians. With so much good coming out of the site, it makes me wonder why anyone would want to shut it down. After all, they didnt do anything wrong. I used Mxtabs for three years, and will be sad to see it go.

OK so inlight of MPA sucking at life I thought I would do alittle dirt diging, and here is what I found, Brasil does not coroperate with US juristriction, and will not hold a ruling made by a US judge to ban/extrodite(sp?) so I talked to a friend that I have that way, and him and I are working on a 9tb data net work based in Brasil. The U.S WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHUT IT DOWN…. and since it wont be owned by me guess what the cant tuch me, Look for it Sep 21 2006 I know it is a bit away, but you will be happy to know that I have about 120,000 total tabs ready (Bass, Guitar, Drums and more) the format is going to be almost identical to MXtabs.Net

  32. Mxtabs was the only reliable source of guitar pro format tabs.. i can’t believe it’s gone so far that even tabbed music is an infringement of copyright! Whats next singing along to your favorite songs!? Has anybody got that link for the MXtabs petition mentioned in post 9 by James? Crap like this makes people not want to get into music and learning to play and consequently less enjoyment of music and sales go down with the dip in interest so in essense the MRA are shooting themselves (presumably in the ass cause they’d probably enjoy that….)

    THANK GOD FOR US: people! we are the most amazing generation, each of us is walking around with at least 1\2 - 20 gigabites of music in our pockets. we are spreading and sharing music so much that those musicinas are getting exactly what they want.

  40. I can’t belive companies are so pety nowdays. Mxtabs was a great site that was one hundred times better than anything out there. Now we have to resort to other tab sites that are more interested in popping up as many pop ups as posibble. I hope MPA get what they deserve. A punch in the nuts for caring more about money than music ( what a fuc**ng liberty ).

MX tabs is (was) the best thing for rookie and experienced drummers and guitarists…I’ts a great thing to be able to view somebody else’s interpretation of a song; they’re not always easy to make out on record, and if they are overdubbed to f*ck it makes it harder still. I am principally a drummer, but play a little guitar also, and I have been able to show far better guitarists than I how to play certain songs. So you can always learn, and there is no better way than using a f*ckin decent tab site like MX.
